Seed Bombs

seedbombs2-e1400255692716 Happy Earth Day! Today I wanted to share with you this amazing craft that will not only honour our Earth with beautiful wildflowers but they also make beautiful gifts! Seed bombs are clay balls containing seeds. Simply toss them anywhere there’s dirt, and wildflowers will spring up. If you wrap them in pretty fabric, they make a perfect little gift.

What You’ll Need

  • 2 cups terra cotta air-dry clay (available at craft stores)
  • ½ cup of wildflower seeds
  • ½ yard of material to wrap the seed bombs
  • 3 cups of compost (available at garden stores if you don’t have compost)
  • Scissors
  • 5 yards of twine or ribbon
  • Scrap paper for making labels
  • Marker for writing on the labels
  • Standard round-hole punch
  • Makes about 15 seed bombs

How to Make

  1. Start by putting 2 cups of clay in a medium-sized bowl.
  2. Add the compost and knead with clay. This process can take about 5–10 minutes. Pulling apart smaller parts of clay helps to push the compost into the clay. Repeat this process until all of the compost is mixed with the clay.
  3. Pull apart sections of the compost/clay mix and make 1-inch balls.
  4. Put ½ cup of seeds into a shallow bowl.
  5. Flatten each ball and dip one side into the seeds and roll back into a ball with your hands and set aside on a tray.
  6. Cut 15 7-inch x 7-inch pieces of fabric and set aside.
  7. Get some scrap paper and cut a 1-inch circle with scissors, or use a large hole punch if you want it perfectly round. With a pen, write a cute love note to nature. We wrote, “To Mother Nature.” Punch a hole at the top.
  8. Cut 15 pieces of twine, each 1 foot, and thread them through the labels that were created.
  9. Place a ball in the center of one of the pieces of material.
  10. Bunch the sides together and tie a bow with a piece of twine at the top of the seed bomb.
  11. Now you’re ready to gift your seed bomb or use it in your garden or while hiking; just unwrap and toss into the dirt.
