10 Great apps for mindfulness, meditation, and health

Zoe
10-great-apps

Ahhh! I have been so busy with school, sports, friends, and after school clubs that I have completely run out of time for myself. I think I really need to step back and take a weekend and just have fun for me (and thank goodness – March Break is coming up!). My mom says she is proud of me for doing so much but that she can see it is having a bit of strain on my mental and physical health. I think I need some balance.

I think it’s really important to reduce stress so you can stay focused on everything and be efficient, otherwise I notice some things falling behind. I found some great apps that are helping me stay on track and stay motivated, and they have even been suggesting new and fun activities for me to try. Are there areas in your life that could use some guidance? If you are anything like me you will probably love these. My absolutely favourite is Headspace (see below). Since I have my phone on me all the time anyway I can use them whenever I need to. Here are some of my favourites that I use to help me relax, be less stressed out, and find fun exercises to do when I’m not playing volleyball! Hopefully you’ll find them fun and useful too!

Mindfulness and Meditation

MindShift

Mindshift
This is my go-to app for relaxation. Sometimes I get super anxious about things and have a hard time ‘coping’, as my mom says. This app helps me track my mood, what situations stress me out, and even gives me activities to help calm my breathing!  It also has sweet tips for things like not letting the little things get to you. For example, I  have an older sibling to look up to, which can be great, but sometimes I think other people might be comparing me to her. Things like that can stress me out! So it’s nice to have some quiet in my mind and this app totally helps.

Stop, Breathe, Think

Stop Breathe Think
Stop, Breathe, Think helps me to think positive thoughts, and I like being able to check in with how I’m feeling. It’s really easy to use, and I like that there are different mediations for what mood I’m in or how I’m feeling and that it’s not always the same.

Smiling Mind

Smiling Mind
This app has different meditations for lots of different age groups, which means it can be good for almost anyone – your younger sister, a group of friends, or maybe even your parents, so this a great one for sharing. I passed it on to my older sister and she loved it!

Headspace

headspace
I mentioned this is a top pick of mine. Between practice,  school, and dinner, and my favourite show, how am I supposed to find time to meditate? I like Headspace because you only need 10 minutes a day for a quick refresh – perfect for those really busy days.

Take a Break! Guided Meditations for Stress Relief

Take a Break
Soooooooo… I’m not very good at sitting still. My coach says we should visualize our plays and I always get so distracted and think about what I want for dinner or what I need to do after dinner (homework). BUT! These guided mediations really help me just disconnect for a few minutes. It’s good that it even reminds you to put your phone on airplane mode, so you don’t get any notifications that break concentration.

Health and fitness

Kurbo Health Coaching and Tracking

Kurbo Health Coaching
My coach is big into proper nutrition and eating healthier. I downloaded this app to help me understand exactly what that means without having to know about all the little details. It also makes it easy to make better decisions about food and exercise, like choosing what snack I should have after volleyball. There are fun games and challenges, which can help keep me motivated sometimes too!

Girl Zone Challenge!

Girl Zone
This great app is actually a lot of fun with games, challenges, and quizzes, but still helps with nutrition and exercise. I like that it’s fun, and I learn about health, and myself, too, there are even tips on things like how to stand up to bullies.

Fitness GooRoos

Fitness GooRoos
I really like this for exercise! It’s fun on so many different levels, and even has the exercises that we do at school and warming up before practice. You can get some extra practice at home, or maybe try something new.

Waterlogged

Waterlogged
Coach says I need to stay hydrated. He can tell when I have not had enough because I get lazy and my muscles start to hurt. This app is a great reminder. I have started to carry a reusable water bottle and this app helps me to keep track of how much I drink.

Plant Nanny – Water reminder

Plant Nanny

You’re not the only one that needs to keep hydrated! Ha! I love this little mini game to help remind me to drink water. You have to water your cute plant to keep it healthy and it only get’s ‘watered’ when you do. Save her! It’s pretty cool
